Does Water Quality Impact Your Oral Health?

The healthiest hands-down thing you can drink for both your oral and overall health is clean, refreshing water. Though in its natural form, water offers plenty of important hydration, when combined with fluoridation, it can help keep your teeth strong and reduce your risk of cavities by up to 25 percent! But how important is water quality when it comes to your smile? Here’s everything you need to know about this helpful hydrator!

Tap Water

While some people may scoff at the idea of drinking tap water, the truth is that most public water supplies are not only perfectly safe, but they are also better for you than filtered or bottled water. That’s because in addition to high cleanliness standards, public water often adds fluoride, a mineral that’s essential to maintaining strong, healthy teeth.

Filtered Water

Drinking filtered water from home is better for the environment than bottled water, as it eliminates the need for excessive plastic that could end up in landfills. But unfortunately, filters can sometimes remove important elements like fluoride from the water that flows from your sink. To ensure that your teeth stay healthy and strong, look for filters that add nutrients as they remove contaminants. This will help ensure that you get adequate fluoride protection even if you filter your water.

Bottled Water

Bottled water is a great option if you’re thirsty on the go; however, it is usually so filtered that it contains little to no important minerals like fluoride. Thus, it is not recommended that you drink exclusively bottled water. Keep your carbon footprint low and avoid buying pre-bottled varieties unless you have no other access to safe drinking water. This will help save your smile, your wallet, and the environment!

Remember, drinking between 11 and 15 cups of water each day is great for your body. With the addition of fluoride, it can also protect your smile by reducing your risk of cavities by up to 25 percent, so before you reach for that sports drink or soda, head to the faucet and pour yourself a glass of healthy, hydrating h20!
